Concentration of highly-developed and diversified industries in Kyushu. Previously Kyushu was a center for the steel, chemical, and shipbuilding industries, but more recently Kyushu's industrial base has shifted to high-tech assembly and processing industries such as the IC-related industries and automobile-related industries.

The annual IC production is valued at about 10 billion US dollars, or 9% of the world's total. Automobile-related industries including Toyota and Nissan operate state-of-the-art facilities, and produce 12 billion US dollars worth of products per year, or about 600,000 complete units.

Tertiary industries such as the telecommunications, environmental and information industries are also expanding rapidly and hold great promise for the future growth of Kyushu's economy.
