Telecooperation
-
Definition
- Telecooperation is an outstanding example for the power of enabling technologies. It stands for the fusion of computer science, telecommunication and multimedia to carry out a cooperative process among organizations and individuals by having better access to and hare timely information over a distance between two or more locations. This has to be achieved by means of information, communication and media technologies.
Telecooperation comprises procedural and collaborative modes of work and its focus lies on cooperation in the broader sense. It is concerned with a series of issues ranging from particular application domains such as the global office, innovative services, telework, telemedicine, teletraining and education, to tools for communication and cooperation.
Due to their ability to overcome the restriction of time and space, telecooperation systems promises to enable the virtualization of workplace, project teams, business units, and even entire enterprise (company).
Organizations, professionals, and individuals that successfully apply telecooperation methods can enhance customer and supplier communications, dramatically reduce costs, and increase the standing in the community and their influence with policy makers. According to this, telecooperation systems are considered as an important factor of competion. They are an innovative in technical, organizational and social terms and constitute an important component in the construction of virtual teams.
Telecooperation can be further enhanced by bringing in new capabilities, such as, Online discussion or conferencing, Information and application sharing, Group document handling, Electronic mail and messaging, Group decision support systems, Real time presence applications, etc.
Dimensions of telecooperation include telework, telemanagement, and teleperformance. Telework is the process of carrying out media supported distributed tasks. Telemanagement concerns the media supported coordination of tasks, while teleperformance is the results of the media supported distributed activities.
-
Motivation
- The main motivations behind the development of telecooperation systems are to: improve quality of services, utilize resources that are distributed in time and space reduce cost timely information and expertise that support decision making.
The current merge of information, telecommunications, and multimedia technologies is greatly influence and facilitate the trend of virtual workplace by introducing effort aimed at improving the concept of: working together mediated by technology. The target is to achieved an effective and efficient interaction that comes close to natural ways of communicating and cooperating among people. As a result and efficient
Distributed problem solving environment that enables a group of researchers located around the world to work together by sharing data, resources and events on a common set of projects. While some experiments are conducted by individuals, the others require the close and intense collaboration of teams that are distributed geographically in terms of time and space. Also, practice of engineering, science, and education places emphases on:
-
- the temporary assembly of expertise that are widely distributed
- intense collaborative application of that expertise to a technical challenge
- an efficient dissemination of the results of the collaboration
-
- As for business, companies will come to see themselves not as fixed structures but as networks of resources to be assembled and disassembled according to need and irrespective of physical location. Also, telecooperation will have influence on the current organizational structures and management concept that will lead to significant productivity improvements, reduction in cost, a better quality for customers
In the medical field, using information, communication and multimedia technologies for the exchange of valid information for diagnosis, provide clinical advice and consultation, treatment and prevention of disease and injuries, research and evaluation, and for continuing education and training for health care providers
Both Electronic Commerce and Electronic Governmnet become the main beneficiary of telecooperation with progrss promted by the fats spreading of the Web.
Wide spectrum of benefits can be obtained as a results of applying Telecooperation systems, some of these benefits are,
-
- It will bring research, education, industrial expertise, professionals and authorities into close interaction.
- Enhance the way professionals offer their services through the use of telematics technologies and media that enable quick response to needs.
- Facilitate technology transfer and international network services
Enhance cooperation between companies, cities, science parks, universities, research institutes, public authorities.
- It will create marketplace for experts and professionals to offer services to Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) and other companies.
- Cooperation will create good environment for new high tech companies and business activities and international network services
- It will bring marketplace for SME to offer and find new technology, international partners, projects.
- Establishing of Telematics services.
- It creates new practises for technology and knowledge transfer.
- Promote the establishment of knowledge intensive new enterprises.
- Promote the process of internationalization.
-
Research Areas of Interest
- Our research area of interest in the are of Telecooperation can be summarized (but not limited to) as follows,
-
- Health Telematics.
- Tele monitoring and control for various purposes.
- Tele-technical services and maintenance.
- Integrating real and virtual environment for team collaboration.
- Virtual laboratory and distributed environment.
- Distributed and collaborative synthetic environments.

Current Projects:
-
Health Telematics
- The convergence of healthcare and telecommunication technologies offers an extraordinary opportunity to expand the availability and affordability of modern healthcare. This direction has the potential and cost effective means to improve access to quality healthcare and services for all the spectrum of the society including the elderly and people with disability, providing medical services to virtually any location (Rural or Urban, National or International). In addition, it enables greater continuity of care by providing access and supporting coordination activities among all parties concerned.
The objective of this project is to investigate the inter-relation between the collaboration services and the distributed medical functions and services with ideas for the establishment of Healthcare Information Network as a way of information sharing.
Health Telematics is a composite term for health related activities, services and systems, carried out over a distance between two or more locations by means of information and communications technologies for the purpose of global health promotion, disease control and healthcare, as well as education, management and research for health.
The concept of health telematics encompasses the following key activities,
-
- telemedicine
- telematics for health research
- telematics for health services management
- Tele-education for health
-
Telemedicine
- is the delivery of health care information and/or services, where distance is a critical factor (by all health care professionals) through the transfer of information including audio, video, graphic data, images, text, etc., using information and communication technologies for the exchange of valid information for diagnosis, provide clinical advice and consultation, treatment and prevention of disease and injuries, research and evaluation, and for continuing education and training for health care providers, all in interests of advancing the health of individuals and their communities.
-
Telematics for health research
- It comprises a variety of scientific activities aimed at solving health problems that may include,
-
- collaboration and networking among individuals and centers for the sharing of ideas, results and access to core competencies, information and knowledge bases.
- development of new telematics technologies and applications.
- evaluation and validation of health telematics and its effects on individuals, societies and health disciplines.
-
Telematics for health services management
- is the use of information and communications technologies for the planning, implementation, financing and evaluation of disease control and of the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of service provision. It also comprises surveillance and monitoring of the determinants of health as well as the management of human and technical resources. These functions are applied with appropriate emphasis within and between various levels of the health system (i.e., global, regional, national and local).
-
Tele-education for health
- is a dynamic process by which change can be catalyzed in attitudes, knowledge, information and skills, by means of information and communications technologies, by and for consumers, health professionals and communities, for the purpose of fostering improved health. The most important ideas in tele-education include:
lifelong learning, health promotion, participative education, education without frontiers, continuing professional education.
-
Virtual Office for Team Collaboration
- It is a joint international project that focuses on the challenge in modern business represented by the need to collaborate with teams that are distributed in time and space.
The key objective of this project is to develop a component based software system that provides an integrated environment for the creation and operation of virtual teams as well as virtual organizations.
A virtual organization or company is
-
- one whose members are geographically dispersed,
- linked by information and telecommunication technologies,
- one who lacks a real headquarters and office facility,
- yet to appear to others to be a single and unified enterprise.
-
- This project will develop and pioneer more human centered forms of collaboration in such an Information Technology (IT) based environment. It offers technologies and methodologies for rapidly building virtual organizations and provides a set of tools that will allow such organization to operate business and interact with other organizations.Furthermore, the propose system provides communication and a customizable user interface to members of the virtual organization, and management, security, and operation of business in cyberspace.
