Public Medical Insurance

To receive treatment at a hospital to receive medical care, you have a choice of a hospital, public health center or private clinic.
Usually you do not have to make an appointment in advance except with a dentist.

The sooner you subscribe to the health care insurance system, the more secure you will feel.Public Health Care Insurance Japan has a public health care insurance system, under which the national government pays part of the costs of medical care for illness, injury and childbirth.

A foreign citizen, if registered as an alien resident in Japan, can subscribe to the public health care insurance system and become entitled to partial government coverage of the costs of care for illness, accident, injury and childbirth. Subscribers receive a health care insurance certificate. If this certificate is presented at a hospital or clinic, the subscriber bears only 10 to 30 percent of the doctor's bill.
